ATL NAACP Honors Legacy of Dr. Gladys West, GPS Pioneer, Following Her Passing at 95

ATL NAACP joins the nation in honoring the life and legacy of trailblazing mathematician Dr. Gladys West, who has passed away at the age of 95. Dr. West’s groundbreaking work in mathematics and satellite geodesy played a critical role in the development of the technology that ultimately made the modern Global Positioning System (GPS) possible.

During her career with the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dr. West helped develop complex computer models of the Earth’s shape, producing precise satellite data that laid the foundation for the GPS technology used around the world today. Her work revolutionized navigation and continues to impact everything from smartphones and transportation to emergency response systems.
